Chief Dan George caps a promising start to 2010
20 July 2010
James Moffatt talks about the year's successes including Chief Dan George's victory at the Cheltenham Festival and how he sees a promising future for the yard.
Speaking about the stable’s progress so far in 2010 James Moffatt described how the slow start to the year which was caused by widespread frost was given a huge lift when the stables conditional jockey James Smith won his first race in only his second start, “On a personal note, I was very proud to see James get his first winner”. That success was followed by Chief Dan George winning a competitive handicap at Doncaster by two lengths. The result was the perfect preparation for the Cheltenham Festival where Chief Dan George won the William Hill Trophy. The win meant that James Moffatt became only the third person to have both ridden and trained a winner at the Cheltenham Festival joining Jonjo O’Neil and Ted Walsh as the only two other people to have achieved the feat. Reacting to the victory he described the winning feeling as “brilliant, almost as good as riding a winner at Cheltenham 15 years ago”.
James also hailed the improved facilities at the yard as playing a large part in his success. “We have a new all-weather gallop, four new turn out paddocks and twelve flights of easy fit rubber fences on the training ground which means we can conduct more schooling session in an environment which is safer for the horses”
Although the summer has been a relatively quiet one for the yard, James is looking forward to the coming months “I have the best bunch of young horses I have ever had with the owners investing heavily in a quality group which we are looking forward to going to war with”. Spirit of the Mist owned by John MacGregor is one example of a new addition to the yard which should bring the yard success in the future. There have also been promising wins for the likes of Glen Rouge and Tabiet.
